Acupuncture is the practice on inserting ultra fine needles into the body with the aim of bringing about a state of balance and well-being. The traditional aim of acupuncture is to restore the natural YinYang flow of 'Qi' throughout the body and mind - using needles to move Qi in the many meridicans that map the body. More recently research has focused on the parasympathetic nervous system and myofascial pathways to try and understand acupuncture. These pathways that trace the meridians and the concept of Qi seems to overlap with emerging data about how the body’s cells communicate.
When you receive acupuncture you are usually lying on a couch, either face up or face down. Your acupuncturist may choose points all around the body. You may feel light tingling or aching with acupuncture and many patients report feeling no sensation at all. Once the needles are inserted you are allowed to rest for 35-45 mins.
Traditional Acupuncturists must study acupuncture to degree level and both our acupuncturists are members of The British Acupuncture Council.
