< Previous J is for Jin Ye

J - JIN YE

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views the body as a self-contained, interconnected system in dynamic balance. In order to remain in good health, it is necessary that various factors maintain a harmonious state of balance within the body.

Among these factors is Jin Ye, the concept of body fluids.  Body fluid is a general term for liquids within the body such as saliva, gastric fluid, breast milk, joint cavity & spinal fluid, tears, sweat, urine, etc. In Chinese Medicine, Jin describes thin, clear and watery fluids that lubricate the skin and muscles. Ye are the more dense and viscous fluids that lubricate the brain, spinal cord and joint cavities.

Jin Ye and Menstruation
There is a close relationship between body fluids and blood and TCM maintains they are needed to mutually nourish each other.  Therefore, when looking at menstrual irregularities we look at the fluids within the body, looking for signs of dryness in the skin and the tongue and asking questions about fluid intake and how fluid leaves the body, e.g. urination and sweating. We also look for signs of too much moisture, such as excessive sweating or saliva production to help determine if there is any obvious hormonal unbalance.

Jin Ye and Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a part of TCM which has a very different approach to fertility than our familiar western view. There are many research studies that suggest that acupuncture can aid in areas relating to fertility including regulating the menstrual cycle and improving blood circulation to the ovaries and uterus. Acupuncture of course can help in many more areas, and you can find more information here: http://www.norwichfertility.co.uk/latest-news/a-is-also-for-acupuncture-.aspx

How NNFP can help
If you are interested how TCM can help your fertility journey our acupuncturist Kate can work with you through all stages. We use acupuncture in our programme primarily to help with stress, pelvic circulation, and side effects of fertility medications. In pregnancy acupuncture is often used in weeks 38-41 to help prepare for childbirth. If you would like to discuss this further, please do get in touch.
