This wonderful blog from our hypnotherapist Kerry teaches us the importance of slowing down and connecting to our inner selves, which is especially potent at this time of year. Connecting with nature and marrying the external cycles with our own inner cycles is a huge part of our work with patients when it comes to self care and nurturing. It is a connecting thread that runs through all our therapists work. To learn more about cycle awareness and how to work with natures rhythms, do get in touch.
"The panorama on my morning cycle is one of skeletal branches etched on a pallid blue sky. Other than the exuberant tangles of ivy, the trees show little outward sign of life. They bore their fruits at the end of last summer then turned inward to reflect, recoup and regenerate, ready to burst into bud in spring.
We can learn a lot from trees.
Whether you are looking to conceive a baby, restore health or embark upon some creative endeavour, a period of rest is a crucial part of the preparation that is often forgotten.
In our modern lives, we tend to be constantly on the go. Modern conveniences like electricity mean that our activity is not restricted by the shortened days. Unlike the trees, we’ve lost touch with that seasonal, cyclical energy that the trees are still very much connected with.
We wouldn’t expect a tree to bare fruit all year around yet we expect relentless productivity from ourselves. Consequently our bodies are under tremendous strain. Without adequate rest they are unable to fully recuperate from our exertions, leaving us out of balance. These rest times are essentially when our ‘house-keeping’ gets done and we all know what happens when you turn your back on that for a while.
The stress hormone, cortisol, will supress illness and keep things patched up for a while but it tends to catch up with us eventually. How many of you limp through to the holidays only to find that as soon as you stop, you get sick?
For women, our own cyclical nature is particularly apparent with our menstrual cycles conducting hormonal fluctuations which, literally, change our mood, desires and energy levels throughout the month. Working against these varying influences, flattening out the waves to fit in with our modern lives can be challenging, just as it would if we were to expect the trees to behave consistently.
I, like you, have a job, a family, a house to keep and various responsibilities and going dormant for three months every year, or even three days every cycle, is not an option for me either. But I can take inspiration from nature and slow down, say ‘no’ to things that drain me and ‘yes’ to opportunities to nourish myself, body and soul.
